AIMS AND OBJECTIVES
Primary aim
The primary aim of the USC is to ensure that the Namibian uranium industry is able to expand and thrive safely and efficiently in an environment of policy certainty and public acceptance with a stable investment climate.
This can be achieved through a continued commitment to ensuring that Namibian uranium is produced, stored, transported and sold in a safe, economical, environmentally friendly and socially acceptable manner.
It requires that the uranium industry in Namibia:
a) is recognized as an operationally responsible industry with effective environmental management and occupational health and safety performance;
b) has fit-for-purpose regulatory and compliance arrangements based on the scientific and physical properties of uranium;
c) has strategic relations with all stakeholders to ensure the sustainable economic, environmental, educational and social development of Namibia through the utilization of its uranium resources; and
d) earns public confidence and acceptance of the uranium Industry in Namibia through the continued replacement of standard practice for best practice.
Steps to achieve aims
To achieve these aims and objectives the USC must:
a) foster cooperation between Members to address non-competitive needs and issues;
b) ensure that the uranium industry is factually and accurately represented both locally and internationally;
c) help create a climate that is conducive to the development of the industry;
d) improve access to relevant, factual information and operational procedures;
e) promote best practices in health, environmental management and radiation related matters and assist members in jointly leaving a positive legacy within the country;
f) represent the interests of responsible members of the industry in matters of regulatory and compliance arrangements;
g) create relationships that represent the Members’ interests with:
i. government and non-government organisations and individuals;
ii. national and international interest and pressure groups;
iii. highly involved communities;
iv. members of the general public;
v. industry employees;
vi. educational groups;
vii. uranium consuming countries; and
viii. other bodies and organisations representing uranium industries.
Interaction with aims of the Chamber of Mines
The endeavors of the USC exemplify the Chamber of Mines’ aim of always seeking to improve industry practice in every facet of operations in Namibia. The Chamber of Mines’ initiatives will ensure that the image of Namibia is upheld as a world class uranium producer with best practices in occupational health and environmental management.
