Mining Expo 2011

Chamber of Mines host second Mining Expo

With the success of the first ever Namibian Mining Expo, which took place on 25 and 26 May 2010, the Chamber of Mines of Namibia will host the 2nd Mining Expo on 18 and 19 May 2011 at the Safari Hotel and Conference Centre in Windhoek under the theme “Opportunities for Growth in Mining”. The demand for last year’s expo was overwhelming with all 94 available stands inside the Conference Centre sold out, and an additional seven stands that had to be accommodated in the foyer of the venue in order to be able to cope with the high number of companies wanting to participate. A total number of 82 exhibitors took part in the Expo, mainly consisting of the Chamber of Mines members like Namdeb, DeBeers Marine Namibia, Areva Resources Namibia, Rössing Uranium, Swakop Uranium, as well as prominent suppliers to the industry, like Telecom Namibia, Glenrand MIB, Afrox, Atlas Copco, the Polytechnic of Namibia as well as the University of Namibia - to name a few. The Mining Expo 2011 will be even bigger, as it includes conferences on various topics as well as a cocktail event for exhibitors and selected guests. Similar to the 2010 exhibition, the purpose of the Mining Expo 2011 will be to showcase the Namibian mining industry and the developments in this important sector to stakeholders, especially government, the media, and the general public. The event presents an ideal opportunity to those who wish to network with and within the industry and make face-to-face contact to identify new business prospects, or enhance existing ones. Last year, the event did not only attract the Prime Minister of Namibia, Honourable Nahas Angula, to come and have a look at stands, but also 190 scholars from various schools attended two sessions during the Expo, where they were informed about opportunities and career paths in the mining industry. The brainchild of the first Mining Expo was the Council of the Chamber of Mines of Namibia, which, after contemplating the project for a long time, finally approved the project at the end of 2009. A year later, the concept was again approved and the scene is set for Namibia’s 2nd Mining Expo in 2011.
